Sometimes "I'm Not Ready" Has an Unspoken Ending

Wed, 16 Sep 2026

I learned another painful lesson about language a long time ago.

Sometimes when someone says:

"I'm not ready for a relationship,"

there is an invisible ending to the sentence.

"With you."

I learned that when someone told me he wasn't in a place for a relationship and then immediately moved an ex-girlfriend into his home.

That clarified things rather efficiently.

Painfully, but efficiently.

He wasn't incapable of making room for a relationship.

He wasn't ready to make room for one with me.

There is a strange freedom in eventually allowing someone's actions to finish the sentences their words leave incomplete.

It doesn't necessarily mean they lied.

Sometimes people don't understand themselves well enough to tell the whole truth.

Sometimes they mean what they're saying at the moment they say it.

Sometimes circumstances change.

Sometimes we're simply not the person they are willing to change those circumstances for.

Whatever the explanation, I learned to stop rewriting someone's behavior so their words could remain true.

This Time Was Supposed to Be Different

That's what makes repetition particularly cruel.

You don't walk into the same fire because you've forgotten that fire burns.

Sometimes you walk back toward it because someone tells you the fire is out.

This time was supposed to be different.

And for a while, it felt different.

I felt seen.

I felt wanted.

I felt cared for.

I felt loved.

And perhaps I was.

That's the difficult part.

I don't think every painful relationship is built entirely from deception.

Sometimes someone really does love you.

They just don't know how, aren't willing, or aren't able to build a life in which that love has somewhere to live.

Love can be genuine and still be insufficient.

That may be one of the hardest truths I've had to accept lately.

If you need me, I'll be 42 Degrees From Here.
