The day I quit my job… I was supposed to move to Thornton, Colorado. Same name as mine. Felt like it meant something. Like maybe it was a sign. It wasn’t. An old friend reached out. Said he needed help. So I gave it. I spent about $3,000— a third of my 401k— to help cover rent. I thought I was helping someone get back on their feet. I thought I was doing the right thing. I was wrong. He was on drugs. And I wasn’t helping him. I was just… the next solution. That’s the part people don’t talk about. Sometimes helping someone just makes you easier to use.
